Birla Guest House Puri is owned and managed by the B.K. Birla Astronomical & Cultural Trust. The Trust established the guest house in 2010 with a simple purpose: to provide a clean, safe, and affordable place to stay for pilgrims visiting Jagannath Temple and travellers drawn to Puri’s beach and cultural heritage.

Unlike a commercial hotel chain, Birla Guest House Puri operates in the spirit of a dharamshala-style rest house — the emphasis is on comfort, cleanliness, and hospitality rooted in trust, rather than luxury amenities or resort-style extras.

The Trust’s involvement goes beyond simply owning the property. Guest house operations are treated as an extension of the Trust’s wider charitable and cultural mandate rather than as a standalone commercial venture, and decisions about tariffs, food policy, and day-to-day upkeep are made with that same non-commercial spirit in mind. This is part of why the guest house has stayed close to its original 2010 character even as the number of guests it welcomes each season has grown.

Our Heritage Rest House Philosophy

With 18 rooms spread across two floors — ground floor rooms opening onto the garden, and first-floor rooms with sea-facing balconies — the property is designed to be modest, functional, and welcoming. Guests can expect AC rooms, attached bathrooms, a large garden, ample parking, a 24-hour front desk, backup power, and laundry service, all managed with the same trust-based ethos the Trust brings to its wider charitable and cultural work.

The term “heritage rest house” is deliberate. Birla Guest House Puri is not positioned, priced, or run as a commercial luxury hotel — there is no spa, no multi-cuisine restaurant, and no resort-style entertainment on the property. Instead, it follows the older tradition of a pilgrim rest house: a place built primarily to give travellers a dependable roof, a clean room, and simple meals close to a temple town, at a tariff that keeps the stay accessible rather than aspirational. Guests who arrive expecting five-star extras may find the property modest by design; guests who come looking for a peaceful, no-frills base for their pilgrimage tend to find it exactly right.

In keeping with the Trust’s values, Birla Guest House Puri follows a strict pure vegetarian, sattvik food policy — no onion, no garlic, no non-vegetarian food, and no alcohol. Being directly opposite the beach and within a short distance of the temple means guests rarely need to plan long journeys during their stay — the two landmarks most pilgrims and travellers come to Puri for are both within easy reach on foot or by a short auto-rickshaw ride, leaving more of each day free for rest, prayer, or simply enjoying the coast.
